Fort Wayne is one of Indiana’s best college towns. From coffee shops to indie art galleries and movie houses to live theatre and music venues, the Summit City offers a ton of spots to unwind, socialize, and be entertained just outside of campus. And with the ongoing efforts to revitalize downtown, there’s never been a better time to live, work, and study here.
We compiled a list of some of our students’ favorite places to hang out off campus, just to give you an idea of what it’s like to be a college student in Indiana’s second-largest city.
1. Cheer for the home teams.
2. Celebrate summer at one of our festivals.
Sticking around over summer break? Fort Wayne is home to a ton of seasonal outdoor festivals, including German Fest, Greek Fest, Three Rivers Festival, Rib Fest, Pride Fest, Hispanic Heritage, and the Baals Music Festival.
3. Unwind at Headwaters Park.
Whether you want to go ice skating in the winter or explore the banks of our iconic riverfront, Headwaters Park has something for everyone.
4. Take in a show.
5. Rock the plaza.
Every Saturday in the summer, the Allen County Downtown Library hosts a “Rock the Plaza” concert right in the heart of downtown Fort Wayne.
6. Go wild.
Did you know we’re home to one of the top-ranked children’s zoos in the country? The Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo is a great place to “get back to nature” and take your mind off those midterms.
7. Get your chocolate fix.
Take a tour at the DeBrand chocolate factory and see how these artisanal chocolates are made—and, of course, stock up on free samples.
8. Snicker at Snickerz.
Snickerz Comedy Bar is located right next to campus and always has a full line-up of comedians and entertainers.
