A campus visit is your best opportunity to make sure the schools on your list are a good fit for you and your goals. 

We wrote quite a bit about preparing for your trip. You learned about important questions lots of people overlook, things to ask students in your major, and how you can learn about campus before you even get there.

But we never told you about the biggest resource available on campus tours—your tour guide! Your guide probably knows the answers to all of your questions about campus and what it’s like to go to school there.

Best of the Blog: 6 Questions to Ask on Your College Tour—Because Your Parents Won’t

Bringing your parents to a college tour is a really great idea. They can help you keep track of all the information being thrown your way, and help you understand a lot of the details when it comes to tuition costs and financial aid.

(Maybe they'll get nostalgic and tell you stories from when they were in college. Who knows what embarrassing things they might share?)

Even though your parents have your best interests at heart, they probably won't ask questions about things that really matter to you, so you need to take the initiative.

We already shared some questions to ask students in your major and questions to bring to your admissions representative—but what about the little things that will affect you day to day? You deserve to get answers about them, whether or not your parents think to ask.

Check out these six questions. Write them down (or put them into your phone) and take them with you on your next campus visit.

If You Only Ask 1 Question on Your College Tours, Ask This

You can exchange emails with Admissions staff, look at pictures, and research a college for hours, but visiting the campus is the only way to really tell what that school is like. Physically going there and experiencing the hum of daily activity gives you insight that you simply can’t get any other way, no matter how many virtual tours you take.

Of course, to get the most out of a college visit, you need to ask questions about the stuff that’s most important to you. Unfortunately, you can’t always do that in a crowded group or if your tour gets cut short for some reason.

If time’s running out and you only get one chance to sneak in a question for your tour guide or the Admissions staff, here’s what we suggest: What’s your favorite thing about this school that no other college offers?
